Public Affairs
The Public Affairs Department focuses on educating the members and the community about the importance of active citizenship, veteran's affairs and historic preservation. The program also focuses attention on safety issues and educating the community about home and vehicle safety concerns. Charitable organizations supported through Public Affairs activities include the Fisher House Foundation and Fisher Houses in DC, MD and VA, American Red Cross – Prince William Chapter, and the 266th Military Police Soldier Care Group.
Additional programs include:
The Overseas Coupon Program is a new GFWC-adopted program. OCP serves military families by assisting us to forward "manufacturer's coupons" to overseas military bases. These bundles of coupons are placed on tables, at the PX and Commissary, or handed out for use by military members and families on base. This helps the family save valuable dollars and stretch their budget. Coupons can be "out-of-date" by up to two months, which allows us to gather, cut, separate into food/non-food envelopes, tally the dollar value and mail to our adopted Okinawa, Japan U.S. Air Force military base. Our donation totals will be listed at their website: www.ocpnet.org.
First Response Training through the American Red Cross for DWC members to enable them to support the ARC when the Emergency Shelter is deployed in Prince William County during an emergency (training is good in all surrounding counties).
Latest Charitable Organization receiving support from DWC: The U.S. Army Caisson Platoon Equine Assisted Program! This is an approved Fisher House therapeutic riding program for amputees at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. It has benefits documented to prove that 1 hour of riding enables a vet to walk 1,000 steps compared to 1 hour of regular therapy enabling them to walk 10 steps. The movement of the horse stimulates the movement of the hips required for retraining the mind to work with the prosthetics. The program is also open to vets suffering to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Members are invited to visit the facility, and monetary donations will be given over FY 2009/2010.
The Marine Comfort Quilts Program expanded their project to embrace families of all soldiers lost overseas in Operation Iraqi Freedom, regardless of which branch of the Armed Forces they served. Their goal is to provide a Comfort Quilt to the primary next of kin of each of these fallen heroes. Women in the DWC are donating quilt squares with logo and message. For more information on Marine Comfort Quilts, visit www.marinecomfortquilts.us.
