2008 yearly summary

WINTER: The year started off with members attending American Red Cross (ARC) CPR certification class. Friendship and laughter filled Dominion Valley Country Club (DVCC) during the first “Bunko Party” for members and guests alike, which featured a luncheon and prizes. In January 2008 the club switched venues from the Evergreen Fire Hall to Kirkpatrick’s Irish Pub and Grille at Merchant’s View Square. We implemented our President’s Special Project, sponsoring the formation of the GFWC Dominion Sisterhood Juniorette Club (DSJC), with 17 charter members. DWC provided financial “seed money” and ongoing advisors to the new group. By year’s end, membership grew to over 20 members, representing 7 different schools. We hosted a “Wine and Cheese Party” for members and guests at La Grange Winery featuring a wine tasting, a souvenir wine glass and prizes. We served as co-hosts of the GFWC VA Northern District Spring Meeting.

SPRING: DWC celebrated its one year anniversary with the “Vegas in the Valley” Casino Night on April 19th at DVCC. A sell out crowd was on hand to lend its support for the fundraising event, which netted $8000 for the four featured charities, Fauquier Family Shelter Services, ACTS/Turning Points Domestic Violence Shelter, INMED Partnerships for Children and Friends of Homeless Animals. As the inaugural year of DWC came to a conclusion, the club was the recipient of numerous recognitions and honors as a result of its work in the community. We were nominated for the Shelley Krasnow Community Service Award, the “Excellence in Business Award in the Nonprofit Community Service Member of the Year by the Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce and received a letter of gratitude from Prince William Board of County Supervisors for dedication to community. Attending the GFWC VA convention, we also received numerous GFWC district and state awards. The newly formed GFWC Dominion Sisterhood Juniorette Club, were featured in a 3 page article entitled, “Cultivating the Next Generation of Volunteers” in the GFWC Clubwomen Magazine.

SUMMER: Members participated in the “Hoofin it for the Homeless” walk at the Airlie Convention Center, raising ~$500 for Fauquier Family Shelter Services. Members also were treated to a Bone China Tea, sponsored by our Juniorette Club, which raised awareness for osteoporosis and benefited the National Osteoporosis Foundation. “Scramble for Shelter,” a golf charity tournament, was held at DVCC on July 14th. The event was in support of the American Red Cross - Prince William Chapter Adopt-A-Shelter Program. Thanks to our generous sponsors and 95 golfers, DWC was able to provide $8,000 to purchase a disaster shelter trailer stocked with shelter supplies, including 70 cots, 30 sleeping pads, 200 blankets, 100 comfort kits, a shelter management kit and a coffee urn. The trailer, which will reside in the county, will serve the residents of Prince William County in times of disaster. As the DWC grew we changed venues again, this time to our current home, Dominion Valley Country Club. Following our participation at the GFWC VA conference, DWC voted to kick off a year of activity in support of the GFWC State project, to purchase a fully equipped new ambulance for the The Virginia Tech Rescue Squad.

FALL: For the second year, members participated in the Haymarket Day Parade, followed by a family picnic. UNO’S hosted this year’s DWC Passionately Pink for the Cure Party. Our 2nd annual “Red White and Blue Jeans” dinner dance and silent auction, held the evening of November 1st at Airlie Conference Center, was a huge success, raising over $7000. Once again, the featured charity was Fisher House, Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Club women attended the Holiday at Headquarters event. Our club ended its year with a Holiday Dinner Meeting, held Monday, December 15th, with gift and coat collections in support of Fauquier Foster Care, Salvation Army, and Goodwill.
